Scoff

Ted Leonsis reveals his profound ignorance of what's going on in the NHL this season (via Kukla's):
"We now play in the toughest division in hockey with two recent Stanley Cup champs and the best scoring duos in the league, etc. yet we compete with all eastern teams for eight playoff spots."
If he'd bothered to check, he would have found that the SE is not quite the toughest division, but is rather the worst division.

If he'd bothered to dig a little deeper, he would have discovered that the SE has been the worst division in 7 out of the last 8 seasons. According to the Sagarin ratings, the only reprieve was a 4th place finish in '05-06 when Carolina singlehandedly hoisted the division out of the dumpster with their Stanley Cup run.

Here are the final Sagarin ratings for '98-99, '99-00, '00-01, '01-02, '02-03, '03-04, and '05-06.

Here's another 'quirky but sobering observation:' You obviously don't have to be very observant to become a bajillionaire.

Maybe so, but to be a bajillionaire you have to be good at marketing, which is what he's doing there. Like any good executive, he's trying to find some spin to the Caps' woeful performance.

Maybe I'm just rising to the defense of Leonsis because he seems to get blogging and the internet -- see Off Wing for more details

If it's just marketing then he's arrogant enough to think people who read his comments are stupid enough to believe them.

So he's either stupid or he's a condescending liar. Or both.

There are lots of idiots who 'get' blogging. Take me, for instance :)

Will any folks change their opinions of the SE division if yet another SE team should win another Cup?
Geez its been 4 years since any other division won a championship yet the SE is the worst? Interesting logic or maybe just condescending lies to promote the losing divisions? LOL

1) Looked up to see when was the last Cup winner from the North East Division. Geez its been 14 years!!
2) Maybe having a crappy division makes it more likely a team will win a Cup? ; )

Follow the links in the post to see the statistical reasons why people say the SE is the weakest.

1) Stats can/are used in a variety of ways to try to bolster one's opinion, yet in the end it still remains an opinion

fauxrumors, are you implying that sagarin's ranking system is somehow biased to denigrate SE teams? It seems like a pretty mechanical and transparent system.

Yes opinions based on statistics are opinions, but at least those opinions have some basis..
